The River Esk Midlothian

Posted by trout fishing around scotland from the lothians on November 18, 2009 at 7:30 AM

For many a year my freinds and i fished this river as boy's learning how to fish. The river used to provide the mills in the town of Penicuik with water for making paper, now all the mills have gone and sadly so have many of the fish.

yes there are still some fish in the river but the river has suffered over the years with pollution and more recently in the last 4-5 years the mills came back to bite as, the residue of the paper making which was dumped in what was thought to be a safe place slipped down the banking into the esk filling it with what i believe was lime. This killed of most of the life in the river but it is now recovering.

some trout are being caught mostly fish escaped from the fish farm, Its time that this river was re stocked it was stocked when i was a boy by eskvally angling association who do not appear to be running any more.

i would like to see this river given back its life and would welcome any interest from anyone who would like to see the same so that this river can be fished by man and boy for years to come.

I totaly agree with you comments on the esk. I used to really enjoy fishing the esk but noticed someting missing in recent years (fish manly lol). not sure why but there seems to be lots more dead wood in it making it harder not to get snaged. why dose the foristry commision end up dumping all the trimmings from ther harvisting ending up in the water?? surly the acid from the pine trees afects the quality of the water!!

Hi has anyone else tried the esk at musselburgh latly. iv been going the last few weeks and hade some good times there. sea trout are running just now and iv had a few nice brown trout there. oh and i got a eel at the top weir by the golf course. there are a few nice pools in the town center if you dont let the ducks and swans put you off.

Hi. I am new to this site. Interested not so much in actual fishing - but access for fishing at the river Esk. I live close to the river and own a wee bit of woodland above the river at Ironmills Park. Have spoken with lots of people who have an interest in the park and some are keen to make the river more accessible by clearing some of the trees on the park side of the Esk. Are there any anglers interested in getting together to make this happen?

Hi i live in bonnyrigg with my life long best friend/fishing buddy and are fly fishermen at heart and we would love to see the esk between lasswade and penicuik cleaned up and re-stocked, i personally fish the esk at polton mill above the old paper mill and at the moment its very bad with no rises anywhere for a few years now. i'm now 30 and havent seen a rise since i was 16 but come april i will be down there with my wet flies and will walk a good mile or 2 up river with my chest waders on and will let you know how it goes.

I live in Penicuik and fish both North & South Esk regularly and have done for over 20 years. Saying the river is lacking in fish is completely wrong. For instance last Saturday I caught 13 brownies up to a very nice ten incher on the upper North Esk (this isn't unusual with suitable tactics for the conditions (fly/spin/bait etc). The river is in a fantastic state fish-wise. I've caught fish from the Penicuik Estate down to Roslin Glen already this season (which is as far down as I've fished). I've also given the South Esk a decent thrash above Gorebridge and had fish up to 9 inch on there this year. I suspect that the further upstream you go, the more of a fish nursery it is and the head waters hold healthy natural stocks of really beautiful fish in excellent condition. I suspect these fish spread downstream as they grow as, in general, my average catch size increases as I move downstream. I would agree that there are a lot of obstructions such as fallen trees and branches, but these seem more of a hinderance to the fishermen than the fish. A couple of years ago I had a Tweed permit for 2 seasons. The average size of catch on both Esk's is far superior (you'll catch 4-6 inch parr all day on the Tweed but my biggest brownie in 2 seasons was 8 inches).

How on earth anyone thinks that dumping bucketloads of dumb trout into the river for heron, mink and otters to feast on will improve things is beyond me. Its also a sure fire way of attracting lets say, some less well intentioned anglers. If you want this sort of fishing there are plenty of commercials. The best and most obvious way to improve fish stocks is to ensure the quality of the water and provide spawning and nursery areas for the fish. Not by adding dozens of 10-12 inchers onto the natural population in what can only be a detrimental competition for food for the naturals. Help the river to maintain itself.

Feel free to check my blog which I use as a fishing diary at http://frazerio-iamthereforeithink.blogspot.co.uk/
